5 Perspectives on How to Use LinkedIn Effectively

5 Perspectives on How to Use LinkedIn Effectively5 Perspectives on How to Use LinkedIn EffectivelyKnowing how to use LinkedIn effectively starts with understanding who is on LinkedIn and for what reason. In 2017, a survey of LinkedIn users showed that 94% of recruiters on LinkedIn use it to screen job candidates. In addition to this, there are 6.5 million active job postings with 3.4 million job seekers using the Open Candidate feature. There are also 4 million independent contractors on LinkedIn.Before reading LinkedIn for business tips all day, and blindly following advice to get work, consider these 10 perspectives on how to use LinkedIn effectively.1. LinkedIn advice is not one-size fits allIndustries are made up of people, and people have different personalities. Reading LinkedIn for business tips given by professionals who are not in your industry, will do you mora harm than good.mora so, everyone is unique. At Find My Profession, we use a screening process for every candidate t o make sure we are fully capable of helping a person. We get to the heart of what each job seeker wants. At times, we are often approached by good people willing to work hard, but they followed advice meant for a different industry.2. Influencer posts are not always accurateKnowing how to use LinkedIn effectively requires an understanding that many posts are opinion-based. Opinion-based posting by thought leaders with experience may have the best of intentions, but it does not make it fact. For example, people who share opinions on resume writing. Their tips may not work in your profession. The wonderful thing about LinkedIn is having business professionals offering advice on how to improve our careers. The problem with advice offered by thought leaders and influencers is that it often offers what they hope to see happen, but not what is really happening now.Trust the posts that offer solid evidence on what is working now. Only read the LinkedIn for business tips that are specific to you.3. Industry changes require new profilesI discovered this one recently by watching entrepreneurs I knew create new profiles one for each industry they planned on taking over. I also believe this happens mora than most LinkedIn users realize. Why? There are more than 500 million user profiles on LinkedIn, with only 3.4 million of them using the Open Candidate feature. If you bounce around between unrelated industries, and its all on one LinkedIn resume, you start to confuse people viewing your profile. You also start to get connection requests from people in industries you no longer work in. They have no idea what industry has your focus.Hiring managers do not know what your focus is and companies will not bother to ask. They will just fear you are a jack-of-all trades.4. Syncing LinkedIn with your email is a mistakeYou wont find this perspective when reading LinkedIn for business tips. I am still paying for making this mistake. As a person with a very old Gmail account, I have mo re than 21,000 emails in my contact list. This 10-year-old contact list includes all the email addresses from emails sent and received. The day I accidentally synced accounts was the day my LinkedIn experience started to suffer. Why? LinkedIn sends out auto-invitations to connect to every email in my contact list. The first day this happened I was hit with hundreds of messages from people who did not remember me, wanted to know why I was trying to connect, or were angry that their email was now something LinkedIn had access to.This was two years ago and I still get connections from people I had emailed once 10+ years ago. I also get lots of spam. Now, I have a profile with pointless connections that spam me far too often.5. Are Premium LinkedIn accounts useful? If you think going Premium is how to use LinkedIn effectively, you are definitely in the minority.By January 2017, almost 80% of LinkedIn users had a free basic account. A Premium LinkedIn account might be useful for your job a s a absatzwirtschaft Manager, Recruiter, Sales Executive, or CEO.The verdict is still out on just how useful Premium accounts are for the majority of users.

The 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuck

The 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuckThe 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuckTo keep up with the world of 2050, you will need to do mora than merely invent new ideas and products, but above all, reinvent yourself again and again.? - ?Yuval Noah HarariWhat got you here wont get you there. You have to ask yourself Whats your ultimate goal?Is it a specific destination (status)? Or is it continuous expansion (growth)? If its the former - then you actually can continue doing the saatkorn thing over and over and over. But if your ultimate goal is continuous growth and expansion, then you must continuously disrupt your current approach. You can never get stuck. Even when what youre doing is working, you cant allow yourself to peak and plateau. The worlds most creative and successful people are willing to disrupt even the most successful businesses and processes to get to the next level. What got you here cant get you there. The defini tion of insanity is doing the saatkorn thing over and over and expecting a different result.Your behavior and environment generate your results. Repetition, although vital, becomes the very things that get you stuck in a rut.For the few willing to continuously chase the next wave of growth, regardless of the waves theyve ridden in the past, this post is for youThe 80/20 ruleThe Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.80% of your success comes from 20% of what youre doing. The logic, then, is to cut out the trivial many and focus directly the vital few - those activities, relationships, rituals, and environments that are actually pulling you forward. This isnt necessarily easy to do in a world of constant distraction, notlage to mention the need to pay bills, etc.But for the brave souls who decide to take a step back and examine th e situation of their lives more mindfully, they quickly realize they were playing someone elses game in the first place. They dont need to do everything they believed they needed to do. In fact, they could actually begin living their dreams, today. Sure, it may be messy. They may have to wake up an hour earlier to sneak some work in before the kids wake up, or before their college exam. But their behavior begins to align more congruently with the future they want, with the life that they want. Those behaviors begin to have a subconscious effect. They begin disconnecting increasingly more with the typical ways most people operate. They discover more ways to focus on their priorities and goals.Over time, their life starts to change. They become more confident and capable. They begin making progress and seeing results.Chances are, theyve initiated what psychologists call a keystone habit or behavior, which ripples into all the other areas of their life. Their standards for themselves incr ease, so they begin listening to and reading more stimulating information. They begin working out. They become more thoughtful in their relationships. They change. They become successful. And then, at some point or another, they get stuck. The 20% of activities that elevated them out of the rat-race become the new 80% of activities that keep them stuck in a new one. They now are left scratching their head and wondering Is this what I really want?An existential crisis ensues, wherein they begin to question everything. They think back on their successes and failures over the prior years and become scared.Their mind fixates on the past. They no longer have a deep connection to their future because theyve powerfully achieved most of their goals, faster than they thought possible. They lose connection with their WHY and feel lethargic. Just at the pivotal moment when they became world-class at what they were doing, they became bored.Thats a costly place to be.At the very moment when your work i s worth potentially millions, you are no longer connected to that same passion.Youre lost. And this is exactly where youre supposed to be.- - - The remainder of this article breaks down the four fundamental stages of learning and high-performance.Following that break-down, I will highlight the powerful strategy and mindset of zur seite hin gelegen thinking, and how you can apply it to continuously leverage your prior successes, never get stuck, and continuously upgrade your vision and your future. The four stages of competenceHere are the four stages of knowledge/skill acquisitionUnconscious incompetence This is where you have no comprehension that you dont have a particular skill or ability. You dont see the usefulness of it. You must recognize your own incompetence and the value of the new skill before moving to the next stage.Conscious incompetence At this stage, you dont have the skill developed but you can at least now see your own inability. You can also see the value of the p articular skill, and it becomes desirable to you. At this stage, you need to start making mistakes and stumbling your way through the early learning process. Most people stop here because they dont want to face the failures or the seeming mountain of learning the new skill. They give up before they really start, due to either a fixed-mindset or a belief that the amount of work isnt worth the uncertainty of the outcome.Conscious competence At this stage, you know how to do something. However, in order to perform the skill, you need to concentrate. You can break your process down into steps but there still remains conscious involvement in executing your skill.Hitting the ceiling of this third stage is where successful people stop. You can get paid really well for being at this level. This is where you are really good at what you do, but you havent drifted back to the childlike play - where everything is instinctive and nothing really matters. You havent fully become absorbed in what y oure doing for the sake of it, where youve left all competition behind. But once you take that next leap out of conscious control and into deep intuition, then youre now in your own world. You have deep mastery, and you also have complete freedom. You now have a completely open pasture. Youre no longer bound to doing your work, your craft, for money. Youve developed the inner freedom to know that money is something you can have whenever you want it.You can create wealth - because creativity is a realm youve become highly comfortable with. You create results, you dont wait for them. You know that the thoughts and ideas you have can quickly translate into physical equivalents.Youre no longer bound by the chains of needing to make ends meat. If you need to make something happen, youll do it.So now youre free.Free to roam and create - or, if you want, to go to the next level where few people are willing to venture. This final stage is where pure creativity can thrive. This is where the t rue masters go, and for them, their greatest joy is going deeper down the rabbit hole. Their mission has become to serve the broader world. They are no longer concerned about their own needs. Thoughts about themselves and their situation rarely arise to their conscious awareness. They are radically interested in solving bigger problems. Theyre interested in inventing new systems, processes, ideas, products, and solutions. This is the highest level of skill-development.Specialists work.Experts solve problems.Craftsman invent.Specialists are a member of a team or part of an already established system or process.Experts focus on mastery.Craftsman focus on mission.Unconscious competence The final stage of skill development and knowledge acquisition is where your identity has entirely reformed - wherein you can not only perform your skill instinctually and without thinking, but you can teach your knowledge, skills, and abilities to others in multiple contexts and at different levels. You know your stuff inside and out and can connect it to broader and seemingly disconnected topics/concepts.Perhaps the most fascinating part about reaching this level is that you stop playing by the rules of even masters. At this stage, you begin inventing new systems and processes and concepts. You begin changing the world.Because your knowledge is so deep and wide - and your skill so instinctual and polished - your mind can wander beautiful places while you do your work. You begin exploring realms far outside your typical work or craft. You begin thinking far bigger picture. And heres where lateral thinking comes in.Lateral thinkingThe system will always be defended by those countless people who have enough intellect to defend but not quite enough to innovate. - Edward de BonoIn the book, Smartcuts How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, journalist and entrepreneur, Shane Snow, breaks down the topic of lateral thinking. He explains that the most successful people in t he world didnt get there by climbing vertically up the ladder, as is customary in corporate America.Instead, you climb a few rungs or develop a few skills, and then laterally shift to a different ladder. This is akin to going from student to teacher faster than you feel ready, but it then forces you to really know your stuff. You take what youve learned and you transfer it to something else. Interestingly, a true definition of learning is the ability to transfer a skill or knowledge from one domain or context to another.Snow provides an example, showing that most of the United States Presidents spent less time in politics than the average congressman. Moreover, the best, and most popular Presidents, generally spent the least amount of time in politics. Rather than spending decades climbing the tedious ladder with glass ceilings, they simply jumped laterally from a different, non-political ladder.Ronald Reagan was an actor. Dwight Eisenhower laterally shifted from the military. Woodro w Wilson bounced over from academia. These men spent considerably little time in politics and became fabulous Presidents. They reached the top by skipping the unnecessary dues-paying steps.Insanely productive people think the same way. Rather than climbing up ladders the traditional ways, they think of alternative routes. They skip unnecessary steps by pivoting and shifting. As Snow says, Lateral thinking doesnt replace hard work it eliminates unnecessary cycles. The moment you attain skill or success in something, leverage it. Use it, and then parlay it into something else.Continue developing the skills, knowledge, and mindset. But apply them in a way different from the norm. Apply them laterally, not vertically.Use your skills to help people in other industries.Perhaps be in a different industry than everyone else with your skill-set.Once your reach a plateau, rather than trying to bust through it, just do something different altogether. This isnt how you stop youre skill and knowle dge development. Its actually how you expand it. Its how you make your learning, thinking, and skills more fluid and dynamic. You can jump laterally to a different project or team for a while - which will be fundamentally good for your brain. But also, you can eventually jump back into your previous realm but at 10 or 100 or 1,000 steps higher than you were previously. In other words, you can avoid most of the glass ceilings and ridiculousness by skipping those steps. You develop skills, apply them in unique ways, and never get stuck. Then, if you want, you leverage your skills, insights, connections, and successes to apply them in a different way - but at a different level than you could ever achieve in a traditional manner. This is a highly adaptive and collaborative approach. Most people will prefer the routine of doing the same work in the same environments. Its safer. Its more predictable. Its slower, but at least there is security. It also stunts creativity and innovative thinking .It stunts experiencing wild new ideas and emotions. It stunts 10X or 100X thinking, where youre now collaborating with people wildly different from you. When you begin to shift laterally, and try new things then youve done in the past, your prior skills actually deepen, because you use them more subconsciously to guide your new insights. You take what youve learned before and apply it to something new to quickly bring a new insight or project or challenge to success. You eventually become a master-learner.With these skills and mindsets, you can then evolve way beyond the realm of mastery, where everything is about personal growth and skill development. You truly can become an inventor with a sacred and powerful mission - and youll have enough context, connections, and adaptability to take the mission to success.Dont get stuck with what worked beforeThe step-by-step advice that made an ancient Greek hero rapidly prosperous will be entirely different from what makes a 21st-century busi nesswoman successful, just as the exact methods an Internet startup uses to grow today will be irrelevant in five years. - Shane SnowThe 20% of strategies that made you successful can quickly become the 80% that keep you stuck beneath a glass ceiling.Eventually, youll need to pivot.Youll need to become more fluid and dynamic.Youll need to think laterally about how you can take your skills and abilities and apply them in a fundamentally different way then is typical. This is a far more creative and collaborative approach - but ultimately, its required to go 10X or 100X bigger than most people are willing to go.From a psychological standpoint, its also how you keep your brain continuously adapting, expanding, and becoming more creative. This is how you dont get rigid, stiff, and stuck.Do you want status? Or do you want growth? Is this about your skill-development and mastery? Or is this about changing the world and being a part of an important mission to improve the lives of other peo ple? Those are questions only you can answer.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. How women can escape the impostor syndrome trap

How women can escape the impostor syndrome trapHow women can escape the impostor syndrome trapSandra welches introduced to me as a highly successful business professional with exceptional leadership skills. She was being groomed for a top executive position, and she sounded perfect for my favorite kind of coaching assignment. I love working with accomplished women who are looking to become even mora effective. It should have come as a shock when, at the end of our first session, this talented and successful woman turned to me and said, I want you to know how nervous I was meeting you. I was afraid that you wouldnt find me worthy to work with. But this wasnt shocking to me because Id heard it before - but only from female clients.Impostor syndrome is the fear of being exposed as a fraud, of feeling unworthy of your success, of not being as capable as others. Both genders experience impostor syndrome, but women are mora susceptible to it and more intensely affected by it.A females self- doubt can negatively impact her career when, as studies show, she pushes less often than her male counterpart for a raise or a promotion. Internal research by Hewlett-Packard found that women only apply for jobs for which they feel they are a 100% match men apply even when they meet no more than 60% of the requirements.Research from cognitive psychology shows that men and women have distinct attributional differences in how they respond to success and failure. Men are more likely to attribute success to personal factors (their ability, talent, effort) and failure to outside forces. Women tend to do the opposite they attribute success to timing or luck, and failure to personal shortcomings. The good news is that if you have fallen into impostor syndrome trap, you dont have to stay there. Here are three ways you can break out1. Own your successSeveral years ago I was coaching a woman as she was preparing for a job interview. I asked her to tell me about the things she did exceptionally well that shed want a prospective employer to know. She was silent for several seconds. Finally, she sighed and said, I really dont know. I do a lot of things well, but when I do, I dont notice it.Competence bears little relationship to confidence. It is only when you are aware of your how good you are that you become confident. My favorite tip for increasing that awareness is to create a success log. On a daily basis (preferably at the end of the day) write down all of the things you are proud of, situations that you handled well. Youll see how even small successes, when recorded and reviewed, begin to make positive changes in the way you evaluate yourselfAnd stop downplaying your achievements. No one gets to your level of success without talent and hard work. Even if luck played a role in your career (as it has countless times in mine), it was no accident or quirk of fate that prepared you to take advantage of the opportunities presented.Lastly, dont minimize or dismiss compliment s by attributing your success to other people or outside factors. The next time someone praises you, just say Thank you.2. Take your place at the tableToo many women attending meetings sit at the back of the room, as if waiting/needing to be invited to take a place at the table. If that is true for you, Id encourage you to stop waiting - invite yourself.Women can also fall into the habit of waiting their turn by holding back at meetings. When you dont speak up and engage as an active participant in the discussion, you dont look polite or shy - you look uninformed or uninterested. This behavior is so prevalent that former Secretary of State Madeline Albright advises young women to Learn to interrupt. At least start by making a comment (or asking a question) early in the meeting, just to get used to speaking and so other participants get used to hearing your voice. Not only should you speak up, with enough volume to be heard clearly, you also need to be both direct and brief in your speech. When you structure your comments like a newspaper (headline first and supporting points later), your input has more impact. Dont add qualifiers that make you seem insecure or powerless Im not sure if youll agree, Im no expert, but , or This may be a stupid question. Remember you are at the meeting because you deserve to be, and your perspective is valuable.3. Power up your body languageIf you think that body language is merely an interesting topic for women in business, think again. Nonverbal communication skills are not only interesting, they are a crucial part of breaking out of the impostor syndrome trap.In general, women are better than men at reading nonverbal signals, but they are less aware of how to present themselves in ways that optimize their credibility, confidence and power.Body language can sabotage your authentic self by making you look uncertain and insecure. Be aware that anytime you physically condense by rounding your shoulders, caving in at the chest, an d pulling your elbows tightly into your waist (all of which women do more than men), you minimize your credibility.Conversely, status and authority are non-verbally demonstrated through the dimensions of height and space. Just by keeping your posture erect, your shoulders back, and your head held high you look (and feel) more sure of yourself. If you stand you instantly gain a status advantage over those who are seated. If you move around, the additional space you take up adds to that impression. If you stand with feet hip-width apart, you look grounded. If you are sitting, you can feel more solid by uncrossing your legs and putting both feet flat on the floor. Also, when seated, try claiming more space by widening your arms away from your body and placing your hands on the conference table or hooking one elbow on the back of your chair. You dont have to be a magician to escape the impostor syndrome trap. You can start by realizing that you, like Sandra, are very worth working withCa rol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. Improve Company Culture

Improve Company Culture If there were one thing that could quickly impact your business profitability, it would be a kollektiv that doesnt work well together. Its like a chain with a few missing links. The only way forward is to repair the chain so that everything stays nicely connected and works as a single unit with one goal in mind success. If you are looking to promote cohesion among your employees, let the fun begin Here are four ways you can build a cohesive team and have fun doing it. 1. Use Weekly Staff Meetings to Lighten the Mood Think back to the years when you were a director or manager who dreaded those weekly team meetings. They were boring and the only thing you could think of for the entire duration is that youd rather be sitting anywhere but here listening to statistics and how the team needed to ramp things up a notch. This could easily be handlumineszenzdiode with a company-wide memo and so your mind starts to drift. Instead of using that weekly meeting to go over facts and figures, why not send a memo and use that time to play a game or two? Let your team get to know each other. Pair them off and tell them to share a secret, something theyve never shared before. It could be an imaginary secret in fact, its better if it is The point is to make that secret so bizarre that the originator will surely hear the rumours over the coming week if it was shared. There are variations of this where the secret is written down on a small scrap of paper and the group has to guess who told that secret. Make those staff meetings fun for at least part of the time. Go over facts and figures if you must, but dont lose your audience in the process Break it up a bit. 2. Treasure Hunts Throughout the Week This one can be loads of fun if done right. There are a number of variations to this type of scavenger hunt game, but the idea is to keep everyone searching for something in plain sight throughout the week. It could be a clock on the wall or a customer service ma nual on a shelf. The idea is to give them clues but not exactly what they are looking for. This is ideal for a Monday morning meeting before giving the synopsis of the weeks tasks which must be concluded by Friday. It is fun to see how your employees begin talking among themselves when putting the clues together to find the treasure. Anyone who guesses correctly on Friday afternoon receives some form of prize. It could be tickets to the cinema or dinner for two at a local restaurant. However, anyone who guesses correctly would need to be rewarded. 3. Attend Off-Site Events If you find that your employees are simply not warming up to each other, it may be time to bring in the pros. HR team building experts can quickly assess the situation and then put together a team building package. Sometimes they encourage taking everyone to outside events and other times they recommend internal corporate team building events, which they will put together for you. It may be a day-long affair over the course of a week with each department getting their own day. They get paid for the day but arent stuck at their workstation. Instead, they will be participating in a team building event. This is one of the most valuable team building activities because everyone dreams of a paid day off. In effect, this is just what this mini-seminar is 4. Team Sports Why not form a football team amongst your employees? Encourage other companies in your area to do the same. Have a weekly game and even a championship series once or twice a year. The trick is to get everyone involved in some way. Those who are older or arent in a condition to be out there on the playing field could be scorekeepers or referees. If there are no other interested companies, make it front-of-the-house against back-end teams. You can have your event monthly or weekly and you can play the game on company time as an added bonus.
